There are two main reasons why crossplay is so difficult for developers, especially for games like Core Keeper:
The Update Synchronization Problem: PC updates (like on Steam) can be released instantly, but console updates must pass through strict, time-consuming certification processes by companies like Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo. For crossplay to work, every platform needs to be on the exact same game version, which is nearly impossible to keep in sync when updates are delayed on consoles.
The Lack of Unified Infrastructure: Instead of using the built-in network systems of Steam, Xbox, or PlayStation, developers would need to build and maintain their own massive backend server infrastructure to handle cross-platform accounts, security, and matchmaking. This requires significant extra budget and ongoing technical support that many smaller indie studios struggle to afford.
